Can you put takeaway boxes in the microwave?
Have you ever wondered if your takeaway box can go in a microwave? We’ve got the answers to all these and more.
In this blog post, we will focus on two of the most common types of takeaway boxes used in the UK – paper and plastic.
Can you put paper takeaway boxes in the microwave?
In most cases. Paperboard is an environmentally-friendly material due to its manufacturing process. In most cases, paperboard is sustainably-sourced and made from 100% recycled material.
Depending on the type of paper it is made from, common takeaway boxes made from paperboard are microwavable. Paper towels, wax paper, parchment paper, paper plates and bowls are also fine in the microwave.
Before putting any paper takeaway box into the microwave, we advise you to check the packaging instructions to make sure. It is also advisable to avoid heating for prolonged periods of time.
You can be confident knowing paper takeaway boxes such as our range of Dispopak white and brown food boxes can be microwaved safely.
Can you put plastic takeaway boxes in the microwave?
No. It is not safe to put common plastic takeaway boxes in the microwave or oven.
Due to its low melting point, plastic carries a risk of melting. This can cause unpleasant smells, damage to appliances, and dangerous fires.
Safe plastics
There are some exceptions when it comes to plastic. Containers made from polypropylene (commonly abbreviated to PP) can be used in the microwave without risks associated with standard plastic.
This is because they are heat resistant and will not deform or melt in the microwave. The plastic will not react with fats or oils, even when subjected to high temperatures; which make them a fantastic choice for use in takeaways and food catering businesses.
What not to put in the microwave
Many boxes and containers not safe for the microwave include:
- Aluminium containers
- Containers with metal rims
- Boxes with plastic and metal handles
- Styrofoam products
- Anything to be used in the cold such as butter tubs and yogurt containers
