Which lids do I choose for my paper cups?

group lidsWith our ever increasing range of paper cups we’ve also picked up several new types of sip through lids on the way, as a result there is quite a large range of lids available on our store. At a glance, this can appear somewhat overwhelming if you’re just trying to buy the correct lid for your cups.

The safest way to ensure you buy the correct lid is to find the paper cups on our site and look in the “related items”, we always list the appropriate lid for that product as a related item to make them easier to find.

In terms of types of lid, we offer the following:

  • 4oz – 63mm rim diameter
Designed to fit 4oz espresso cups (plastic and compostable options)
  • 6oz – 73mm rim diameter
Fits only the 6oz flat white paper cups (plastic)
  • 8oz – 80mm rim diameter
Designed for all regular 8oz paper cups (black or white / compostable or plastic)
  • 10-20oz – 90mm rim diameter
Designed for all regular 10-20oz paper cups (black or white / compostable or plastic)
  • Ultimate – 86mm rim diameter

As you can see we offer various options on these lid sizes. A lot of our lids are available as either a black or white lid to suit you individual requirements, most are also available as a compostable alternative too now to suit our biodegradable paper cups. The regular plastic lids are made from Polypropylene and are completely recyclable. The compostable alternative lids are made from cPLA, a cornstarch based natural alternative to plastic. These are biodegradable and can be composted too.

Ethical and sustainable sourcing of raw materials

knife_fork_spoon-webWe specialise in environmentally friendly catering supplies and food packaging products. Since the increased interest in environmental impact of disposable products we’ve been championing our ever increasing range of eco-friendly alternative products.

The goal has always been to offer an environmentally alternative to every range we supply; this gives customer a choice between using a regular disposable item or a biodegradable product where this is desired or required.

With any shift in buying patterns and product demand it’s important to look at any other secondary environmental factors which might also be relevant. With biodegradable products for example, it’s common for plastic (polyethylene) coatings to be replaced with natural PLA (cornstarch) layers. The secondary impact here could be the knock-on effect with crops grown for food production with focus shifting to supply market demand for PLA. We go through a detailed certification procedure with any supplier or manufacturer of these materials to ensure that the raw materials are sourced in a sustainable fashion. The manufacturer needs to have a infrastructure in place for obtaining their raw materials that doesn’t impact local food production or the local environment.

Another example might be the increased use of wood / paper based products over plastics. We’ve seen plastic straws partially replaced with paper straws for example, and a huge increase in the sale of wooden cutlery. This all increases demand for paperboard and birch wood respectively in these examples. Again we always seek certification from the raw material sources to ensure that any forestry is conducted in a sustainable fashion (https://www.rainforest-alliance.org/articles/what-is-sustainable-forestry), new forests should be planted as trees are harvested; normally with specific types of quick growing birch.

Our new range of bamboo products are another excellent example of a focus on sustainability. Bamboo is an extremely fast growing plant, anything harvested for pump can be replaced extremely quickly minimising any environmental impact.

Please get in touch with our team with any requirements you may have for environmentally friendly biodegradable catering supplies, we’re always on hand to offer advise where required.

New product: Wooden Disc Stirrers

Wooden-Disc-Stirrer-150mm for webOur ever expanding range of wooden cutlery now includes a birch wood version of the disc stirrer. We’ve offered this item for some time as a disposable plastic item, the product that has proved popular in pubs, bars and clubs for use in cocktails.

We’re keen to keep up with market demand when it comes to trends in disposables and we’ve found that a lot of venues and sites are seeking to move away from non-essential plastic-based disposable items, with disc stirrers being a good example of this.

Our plastic disc stirrers are completely recyclable, as long as they’re sorted and sent to a suitable facility, or simply put in with plastic waste they get recycled and don’t end up at landfill. The problem arises when the correct measures are no in place to collect the discarded disc stirrers. At event sites there will often be a general waste bin instead of several bins offered for rec ycling purposes, in these instances the plastics will not be sorted correctly and recycling is not possible.

Our wooden disc stirrers are made from 100% pure birch wood; they contain no coatings or plastic layers. This means they’re 100% biodegradable and compostable. It also sends the message to customers that you’re thinking about the environment when it comes to disposables – at some types of venue or festival  this can prove to be extremely important with the increased public focus on sustainability and environmental impact.

These items are available straight away from stock, either as a pack of 100 or a full box of 1,000. Please see our range of biodegradable wooden cutlery for more information.
